Sylvia Grinnell
The Trans Canada Trail Foundation is working in cooperation with the “Bridges for Canada Program” of the Department of National Defence to assist each province and territory in building bridges across Canada for the Trans Canada Trail.
Since 2002, the Government of Nunavut has been working with the Department of National Defense (DND), the Trans Canada Trail Foundation (TCT) and the Rotary Club towards the design and construction of a pedestrian bridge over the Sylvia Grinnell River as part of the “Bridges for Canada Program” between the TCT and DND.
This project was identified in the Sylvia Grinnell Park Master Plan as a means of joining Qaummaarviit Territorial Park and Sylvia Grinnell Territorial Park. The bridge, and trail development between the two parks, would be a significant addition to the Trans Canada Trail in Nunavut.
In keeping with the park master plan, the proposed bridge is a cable-suspension pedestrian bridge and it does not have any in-water structures. The bridge is designed with a narrow width (0.9 meters) and will include bollards to eliminate vehicular traffic on the bridge. The recently completed design by DND has an estimated cost of $2 million for construction, and the multi-partner team is in the midst of discussions to determine whether its construction is feasible in light of the new estimated cost.
Based on this design, DoE has received permits and approvals from all regulatory agencies, and is working with the Rotary Club of Iqaluit and other partners, including DIAND, towards funding for the project.
